Posture@Work desk & posture assessments

Join Posture@Work Fitness and Take Control of Your Health

Today’s fast-paced corporate work environment leads to a increase in sedentary lifestyles, particularly among those with desk jobs, this is called sedentary dysfunction. This poses a significant threat to heart health, increases musculoskeletal conditions and leads to a rise in a range of health conditions including cardiovascular diseases, obesity, and diabetes.

Improvememnts in technology and the demands of office work have led to increased hours of sitting at a desk which means little-to-no physical activity throughout the day.

When we sit for long periods of time our muscle activity decreases, this leads to a reduction in the body's ability to regulate blood sugar, control blood pressure and break down body fat.

Desk jobs are a main reason for sedentary behavior, the static posture associated with working at a desk can lead to neck, back and shoulder issues.

Number of people working from home or hybrid working

As of June 2023, according to the Office of National Statistics, current working arrangements among UK workers were as follows:

  • Work from home all the time: 10%
  • Work from home some of the time: 29%
  • Unable to work from home: 39%
  • Not worked from home, but home working an option: 10%
  • Not worked at all: 12%

My Approach

My approach is very simple, identify ways to improve the cause of the sedentary dysfunction and then create a plan to deal with said problems. This takes the form of:

  1. Desk Assessment
  2. Posture Assessment
  3. Action Plan

There are different factors outside of your control to consider when it comes to corporate health & fitness but desk ergonomics, posture and exercise are in your control.

Desk Assessment

A ergonomic desk assessment looks at a number of things in your workstation,  this includes:

  • Keyboard & mouse
  • Display screens
  • Furniture, desk & chairs
  • Mobile device handling
  • Environmental factors

Workstations that are not set up correctly lead to musculoskeletal injuries, fatigue and eyestrain. setting up a workstation involves looking at the equipment used and finding ergonomic replacements.

Posture Assessment

Posture Assessment

A posture assessment involves me taking a complete look at how you sit and stand and whether this might be causing you problems or pain.

Performing a posture assessment allows me to look at overall alignment and how the body is moving and functioning.

Common conditions such as herniated discs, stenosis and Kyphosis can be caused by poor posture.

Action plan

Posture Assessment

Once the assessments are concluded I write an action plan and report that includes:

How to improve your workstation

Advice on how to improve your workstation and what equipment you may need.

Exercise/Training plan

I will design a training plan which will include the appropriate stretches to do at your desk and a exercise training plan to do while you at the gym or home.
